After being so inspired by today's earlier post on my new discovery of the blog Unabashedly Prep, I've decided to create a preppy-specific blog of my own, as preppy is really my main style. I will therefore be blogging at The Preppy Handblog full-time and posts on PT&T will probably become rare. I've managed to do 44 posts in 2008 and 44 in 2009, so I will try to stick to that tradition. Therefore, this blog will turn into a more runway-related one and there won't be anymore posts on Rugby (tears) or any other preppy topic. For those posts, please visit TPH. I hope that it becomes an even greater success than PT&T and I hope that all of my readers here will come along for the ride. And Your Love Is My Drug will still be around too (just started that one a few days ago) and act as my online diary of sorts. Thanks again and please read and follow TPH! xoxo

Unabashedly Prep: New Blog on the Radar

I think I've found my favorite new blog! Move over, Sea of Shoes! Unabashedly Prep is the new hotspot in the blogosphere. Of course, it focuses mainly on the preppy scene and WASP-y attire, but that just so happens to be my personal favorite style so I'm thrilled! Thanks to Rugby's blog The News Room, which featured F.E. Castleberry's blog yesterday, my world has gotten a little bit preppier. I love everything about it- the layout, the logo, and the innumerable Rugby references. So if you're a prep fanatic like me, you'll surely enjoy this new discovery!

You've got a very important date. And it's not to go see Tim Burton's 3D production of Alice in Wonderland in theaters, either (though that is pretty high up on my priority list). The date I'm talking about is the first day of spring. Yes, it's only January and everyone is still worried about taking down their holiday decorations let alone starting spring cleaning. But with Alice hitting theaters in less than two months, you have to be dressed appropriately for any mad tea parties that might spring up. Designers this spring put out a wide array of trends on the runways- from crisp and classic at Ralph Lauren to fun and beachy at Diane von Furstenberg. You just have to be able to choose the right ones to wear, and look no further than the new adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic for inspiration. Start off with Alice. Sweet, charming, and blue is the look to go for. Chanel did a pretty fairy tale-esque ensemble for spring that would surely make Alice proud. Next, the Mad Hatter. I don't know which I'm more excited for- Johnny Depp's portrayal of the crazy character or his outfit. Balmain's tattered yet embellished collection this season would fit right in with the Hatter's frayed top hat and elaborate garb. Finally, the Queen of Hearts. Rodarte's wild red and black minidresses would be the perfect thing to wear when you're trying to figure out who stole your tarts.

It's Christmastime In The City

Sorry for the slowdown in posts recently! I've been super-busy at college with finals and whatnot, but I'm home for Christmas break which means a lot more posts (at least until school starts back up in mid-January)! But now, back to the important stuff! Ever since I saw the Gossip Girl episode "The Treasure of Serena Madre" I've been obsessed with lace. Serena's Stella McCartney jumpsuit had a gorgeous inset of lace in the deep v-neck. Small touches of lace like this outfit has are very chic, especially for all those holiday parties coming up. So take a cue from Miss van der Woodsen and add a bit of lace to a simple outfit. This Free People top, left, is a simple knit with lace sleeves and an open lace back for an air of mystery. Worn tucked into a full high-waisted miniskirt with tights and heels or even with dark skinny jeans and a shrunken blazer, this top is a very versatile piece. The Rugby dress, right, has the same couture holiday feel but in a more exaggerated way. A simple strapless black minidress overlayed in lace would be perfect with heels for a party or a blazer, tights, and boots for a trip to the Upper East Side. Just remember to keep the lace classy and chic and you'll be the belle of the ball this holiday season.

It's (Almost) The Holiday Season

With the holidays right around the corner (Thanksgiving is in less than two weeks!), countless dilemmas arise: who's hosting the parties? What should we do for dinner? Where will l I find gifts for everyone? When do I have to put up all the decorations? And of course, the most important question of all, what should I wear? This holiday season, the look is luxe. Rugby has a chic little gray fair isle sweater dress with purple and fuschia in the print that adds a pop of color. Go bold with some fuschia tights and sparkly flats rather that black tights and boots. Unexpected pops of color or jolts of sequins can add a more festive element to a look. Another fun look is a colorful rugby shirt paired with a high waisted ruffled mini and pretty lace tights and oxford heels. A cool sporty take on holiday attire can always be party-ready. Just remember 'tis the season to be jolly!

I solemnly swear that I'm up to no good! Forget waiting for Halloween to wear your striped scarves and knee socks! Get out all your Hogwarts-esque gear now because prep school chic is very in this fall. Ever since my friends and I decided to be Harry characters for Halloween back in the first week of September we've been obsessed with dressing like we shop at Madam Malkin's (not for robes, of course, but for other collegiate attire). One of my favorite pieces this fall is the Tamber Cotton Lightning Tee from Rugby- I mean, nothing can get more Harry Potter than a tee adorned with lightning bolts and the phrase "Whiz Kids" on the front! But how to get the look without looking like you just stepped off the Hogwarts Express onto Platform 9 3/4? Pair an uber-Potter piece with more modern, contemporary pieces. Try that "Whiz Kids" tee with dark skinny jeans, buttery brown leather riding boots, and a tailored blazer or take any of these pieces from Rugby, Gap, and J.Crew and mix and match til you find the perfect outfit. Glasses are always a fun accessory to add (plus Harry wears them!) so even if you don't actually need them you can head to your nearest Claire's store and grab a pair in classic black or tortoise or in a fun, bright hue. Mischief managed!

Polo match ready? So spring 2008. Safari chic? Way spring '09. Relaxed and pretty in denim? Spring 2010 here we come! Ralph Lauren always thrills during New York Fashion Week, and this runway season was no different. Keeping his signature preppy chic style, Ralph designed a collection of blue- from washed and worn denim to tailored navy pieces. Paired with crisp white and sparkly heels, the collection screams springtime. These are my three favorite looks of the show- a more casual and airy ensemble, a tailored blazer and silver destroyed jeans, and an all white ruffled outfit. These looks, as does the rest of the collection, invoke an Americana motif without a turquoise and silver concha belt or a Navajo print dress. It's like a breath of fresh air, the aesthetic and the designs.

Couture Classics: The New Way To Study In Style

The classics are so beloved generation after generation because of their universal plots, themes, and morals. But although we've always been told to never judge a book by its cover, we can't help but purchase the most eye-appealing copy of Oliver Twist on the shelf for English class. And now publishing company Penguin is making it even easier to have the chicest edition of Brontë's Wuthering Heights, Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, and Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo, whose art has been featured in the likes of Vogue, created totally cool new covers for these three classic tales. The new covers still capture the essence of the stories but with a fresh, modern take. My favorite by far is the Pride and Prejudice cover, done in a Gothic-style silhouette illustration in chic black and white. You best hurry and grab these novels off the shelves before your professor assigns them to be read, or else you may be stuck with one of those old drab copies!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like all their fall/winter clothes are dismal grays and black. I absolutely love color in the spring and summer, but once fall rolls around and the leaves start to fall I always pull out those swingy gray mini sweater dresses, black sequin- and pearl-embellished cardigans, and dark tights and shoes. All of those things are chic, classic, and cool, but pops of color in the more dark months add a punch of personality to an outfit. This fall I'm taking a cue from Teen Vogue's "Little Ladies" spread and dolling myself up in candy-colored tweeds, bejeweled brooches and headbands, and cool denim. I'd definitely say a fall 2009 must-have is a bright jacket, be it boucle, houndstooth, herringbone, or boiled wool. When worn with a simple tee or pretty top underneath, dark slim jeans, and stylish little flats, it can give your whole ensemble a new, colorful twist. If you're feeling extra daring you can add some oversized rhinestone brooches to your lapel or put a jewel-encrusted headband in your hair. And make a trip to the local candy store to finish off the look!

Rugby and Lucky Magazine fans unite! This week only, guest bloggers from both sites are swapping spots. Rugby's The News Room is playing host to Lucky Mag's contributing editor Emily Hsieh, while Lucky's online blog Lucky Right Now is featuring a guest blogger from the Rugby team. Rugby was featured in the September issue of Lucky with cover girl Mandy Moore, so the brand and the mag decieded to collaborate their aesthetics. Lucky usually features classic, wearable pieces and cool, out-of-the-ordinary accessories in their pages, while Rugby's style sensibility is all prep school with an edgy streak. A mix of the two that will be seen on both blogs will be intriguing to watch. Be sure to check back at the blogs daily for the latest on Rugby happenings at Lucky and vice versa.

Nothing makes me happier than being ahead of the game- finished with a paper early, having plans all set for the weekend, and, of course, wearing an outfit that won't be seen in magazines for another four months. Yes, this is a 100% true tale. I wore this chic halter Caché prom dress embellished with paillettes, sequins, and tulle back in May for my prom in übercool New York City. Inspired by Barbie's 50th Anniversary fashion show from Fall/Winter Fashion Week back in February (which I attended), I wore a bouffant hairdo, super-sparkly lilac and royal purple Urban Decay and Hard Candy eye shadows, a glittery Dior lipstick, a giant rhinestone bauble ring, and sky-high black patent cut-out booties. Little did I know that my ensemble, which looked straight out of a Barbie box, would resurface in Teen Vogue's September 2009 "Little Ladies" fashion spread. The Teen Vogue version of my dress was paired with a sleek beehive updo, a black and white headband, and red lace gloves. I love how one fun, statement dress can be interpreted and styled in so many different ways, from Ken's prom date to the Mad Hatter's tea party guest. So take a cue from this story and dare to be different: punk out your prom dress for a back-to-school party with black nails and a studded choker, or doll it up with candy colored flats and layers of pearls. Either way, you're sure to stand out- months before the look will be seen on Vogue's glossy pages.

Rain Or Shine

The must have accessory at this year's Gold Cup Final Polo Match in Midhurst, England wasn't a preppy Ralph Lauren blazer or even a monogrammed signet ring- it was a bright, cheery umbrella. The dreary British weather surely didn't but a damper on the polo spectators. Clad in all things classic, from floral ruffled dresses as seen on the likes of Poppy Delevigne (in Ralph Lauren) to simple khaki trench coats paired with pops of color, polo enthusiasts had a jolly good time at the match, rain or not.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Jacket

Think the latest fashion repeat is the 80s? Try subtracting about fifteen years. Little did The Beatles know that when they released their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band back in '67 that they were in actuality starting a style phenomenon. The costumey band jackets that graced the album cover are back, but in styles a little less Halloween and a lot more avant garde. The jacket's revival was just catalyzed a year ago by Christophe Decarnin for Balmain during spring/summer 2009 fashion week in September of 2008. The infamous collection not only put Balmain back in the style spotlight, but it also re-popularized the band jacket. Newly done with luxe detailing like metallic trim and structured shoulders, Balmian's jackets have been seen on celebs form Beyonce to Rihanna, and their similarly too-cool micro minidresses have been spotted on the likes of Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham. Now the jackets are ready for fall, done in wools and tweeds and embellished with sequins and edgy topstitching. Free People has a plum cropped version, while the Paul & Joe Sister take as seen in September's Teen Vogue, above, is definitely my favorite. Be sure to snap up one of these uberchic jackets soon because they're sure to sell out as fast as The Beatles' hit record.

Looks like Holly Golightly is Karl Lagerfeld's new muse of the moment! In Chanel's new ad campaign, Brit singer Lily Allen is all dolled up and looks very Audrey Hepburn. In a classic Breakfast at Tiffany's moment, Lily sports a sleek beehive hairdo complete with an oversized sparkling tiara, Chanel ruffles in their signature black and white, and of course the latest in the land of the Chanel handbag.

Think Juicy Couture is cliché? Think again! Their new luxe line Bird is a lot less terry tracksuit and much more rocker glam, from cobwebby knits and sequin-adorned tops to rich leather leggings and a to-die-for velvet military-style jacket. Though the price points for these items are not perfect for the current state of the economy, the items themselves are true investment buys. The look is sleek, edgy, and luxurious all at once, allowing the items to be paired with simple skinny jeans and flats just as well as party dresses and ultra-high booties. And the muted palette is a perfect canvas for other clothes or accessories, giving the pieces endless versatility.

PT&T Is Getting A Makeover!

Sorry for the lack of posts- I've been on vacation in Nantucket and just got back the other day. This fall, I want to amp up Pink Tartan & Tweed to make it more enjoyable for my readers. I will be starting college so I may not be posting much at the beginning of fall, but once I get into the swing of school, I'll definitely be trying to remake the blog. I want to post more pics of myself in cool ensembles as well as other people in inspiring outfits, from celebs to friends. I also want to do an "Obsession of the Week" feature and a co-blog The Recessionista Diaries which will be a weekly post here on PT&T with the latest on budget-friendly clothes and accessories. And as September rolls around I'm going to try to do full Spring/Summer 2010 fashion week coverage. I know this takes a lot of blogging and I'm going to try my hardest to make this blog the best it can possibly be! Sneak Peek: Rugby Fall 2009

Some new fall pieces are arriving at Rugby! Even though July has barely just begun, Rugby is kicking off back-to-school shopping in style. From the looks of things, Rugby's autumn wardrobe consists of cranberry, gray, black, and cream done in a preppy, boarding school-ish way. Patchwork rugby shirts, oversized cardigans, and cricket striped shorts are the girls' look, while the boys get shawl collar appliqued sweaters and cool distressed shorts. Hopefully even more clothes will be arriving soon, so sit tight for some great stuff!

The de facto uniform of all the hipsters who attended this year's Glastonbury Festival? Wellies, of course! Even though the English skies were oddly clear at the recent festival, that didn't stop "it" girls from the UK and the US alike from dressing for a classic day in the English countryside. Mud-encrusted Hunter wellies were seen on everyone from "it" Brit model Lily Donaldson to rock 'n roll daughters Theodora and Alexandra Richards.

Lady Libertine

The cool prep label Libertine has been out of the spotlight since the end of their GO International collaboration with megastore Target back in 2007. Now, designers Cindy Greene and Johnson Hardig are making a comeback with their Anglomania-inspired fall '09 collection. A review on style.com reads, "Watch your back, Rugby: Libertine's school-tie blazers looked like cult items right out of the gate to us, especially when emblazoned with crest patches featuring subversive motifs like a swan with a broken neck... 'We wanted to turn the fussy, Waspy world upside down,' Hartig said." And with the silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II screen printed on everything from tees and trenches to flouncy party skirts, the collection gives preppy a cheeky makeover. That sounds like a challenge to me, Rugby!

Here are my favorite looks pulled from this fall's collection:

Her Royal Highness: This look is by far my favorite- the striped blazer with the crest, the full skirt emblazoned with a metallic gold façade of Queen Elizabeth, and the uberhigh patent platforms make for a colorful and fun yet totally posh look.

Patchwork: A cream cardigan, beaded fringe top, and tweed skirt always look better when covered in crest patches. The purple tights add an extra punch of color.

Royal Guard: This men's look is so cool- I love the British soldier printed on the bright red coat and the rolled tweed trousers.

Mad For Plaid: This look is prim and proper from afar, but up-close it's anything but- mixed checks and tartans on the blazer, skirt, and scarf create an eclectic ensemble.

Paging Chuck Bass: This is such a great guy look- the cool glen plaid coat and shawl neck cardigan are quite hip and classic all at once.

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover: A little suit in the print of a book shelf you'd find at an old library in the English countryside? With a fur stole embellished with a few crests, the look is simply chic.

Charmed, I'm Sure

Emma Watson happened to be one of those few lucky children who got their letter of acceptance into Hogwarts, and she got hers even before she turned the proper age of eleven. Since she was less than a decade old, Emma has played the beloved female member of the Harry Potter trio, Hermione Granger. As her clever on-screen persona has evolved through the soon-to-be six movies, Emma herself has evolved as well, most notably in her sense of style. Third time is certainly the charm for Emma, whose appearance on the cover of August's Teen Vogue is a complete "threepeat." The other two covers she graced (November 2005 solo and June/July 2007 with costar Daniel Radcliffe) were purely to promote Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, respectively. But this time her cover story does not focus on what's next for Hermione, but what's next for Emma. Since Sorcerer's Stone, Emma has appeared on the red carpet but only recently has she begun to attend fashion shows in Paris and even become Burberry's fall 2009 "it" girl. Her Teen Vogue shoot captured her new image as style wizard in eccentric yet totally classic British looks in a gorgeous English backdrop. Emma's fashion transformation has put all eyes on her, no polyjuice potion necessary.

We're All Mad Here

- Goofy-cute accessories like these Marc by Marc Jacobs "Miss Marc" crown flats can add a touch of whimsy and a punch of color to a simple outfit.
- Contrasting finger and toe nail polish is way cooler than a matching mani-pedi. I'm a fan of the dark grape shade on the toes and the opaque baby pink on the fingers.
- Sheer, barely-there tights with pretty embellishments like chic tulle flowers and polka dots add interest to a micromini dress or skirt.
- Tiffany & Co. just came out with these new key pendants. I just got this sterling silver crown one on the giant beaded chain for graduation and it's such a chic look that's reminiscent of the big key to the garden gate in The Secret Garden.
- Beyoncé has been sporting some great jacket and skinny pant ensembles lately! At Obama's inauguration in January, Beyoncé wore this beautifully tailored embellished tailcoat with slim leather leggings and great black gloves and booties, right. And recently she was spotted in my personal favorite jacket from Spring '09- the jewel encrusted military jacket by Balmain- with dark skinnies and classic black heels, left.

Anna Sui- a preppy kilt mixed with Anna's signature boho flair? A match made in fashion heaven!

Balenciaga- the beautifully draped skirt is great with a simple knit sweater, sheer polka dot tights, and suede booties.

Balmain- tulle, leather, and glitter make the coolest party dress!

My latest inspiration board, clockwise from top left.
- Blake Mycoskie, the creator of TOMS Shoes, with Maggie Grace, at the CFDA Awards wearing none other than his own creation of paint-splattered TOMS.
- French fashionista Louise Ebel (and fellow blogger of Pandora) in Paris in a to-die-for military-inspired coat by Primark in bright candy apple red with black leather leggings and sky-high platform booties from Topshop.
- Yves Saint-Laurent silver cage booties as seen on the Spirng 2009 catwalk. I love this pair as opposed to the black cage mid-calf boots seen everywhere because these are fresher, chicer, and sweeter, adorned with a black velvet bow.
- Déjà vu? Model Hanne Gaby Odiele was spotted at the New York City Topshop store opening in this ensemble, which bears quite a resemblance to Balenciaga's infamous Fall 2007 collection. Blazer? Check. Jodhpurs? Check. Ethnic scarf? Check. Black booties? Check. I loved this look back in '07 because it pretty much sums up my style in one outfit: preppy blazer, hippie scarf, classic with an edge jodhpurs, and chic, fashion-forward booties.

NYC Prep: TV's Hottest New Reality Show

Set on the Upper East Side in NYC, the show follows the lives of six Manhattan teens, from SAT scores to Fashion Week. I can't wait to watch real NY high schoolers dish out drama and debut designer clothes that are straight out of GG itself. Catch the premiere on Tuesday June 23 at 10, and every Tuesday after at 9. The hit CW show is not literally going macabre on us, of course, but Luella's fall 2009 runway show surely featured Gossip Girl-ready prim tweeds, tights, and tailoring in somber black, gray, and dark metallic shades. Chic little boucle suits that Blair Waldorf would die for and simple jumpers with military-inspired embellishments in dim hues perfectly mix prep with punk for fall. Too hesitant to don all black? Wear a gray blazer over a crisp blue or white oxford shirt, or add some glam sparkle with shimmery gold tights instead of opaque black. Top off your look with a chic beret or a metallic gold bag and you're ready to hit the town- in London or on the Upper East Side!

This spring I have been inspired by the whimsical tea-party- meets- prep- school look. My favorite brand Rugby posted a look on their blog The News Room a while back featuring a Natick, Massachusetts employee in an airy chiffon frock worn with a sporty cricket stripe cardigan and black booties, left. Then at New York Fashion Week back in February, Whitney Port was spotted on her way to the DVF show clad in the designer, with a black and cream striped jacket with the most gorgeous floral chiffon party dress, right. So, I decided to create my own look inspired by this new sugar and spice trend. My ensemble, center, features the very Rugby cricket cardi that I first fell in love with, layered over a charming Aryn K. ruffled floral dress. I wore my black patent Tory Burch Revas because it was too chilly for my black patent Jack Rogers sandal heels. Accessorized with shimmery gunmetal Ray Ban Wayfarers, a black Chanel bubble ring, a black and cream Jessica Kagan Cushman bangle, and simple pearl earrings, this look is the perfect way to kick off spring.

I got a sterling silver crown ring that's engraved inside with "Elle Happy 18th xoxo." Love it! The latest cover up to grace the runways and the pages of the most stylish magazines? The military jacket, of course! The classic staple is making a comeback, so be at the ready. But this look is surely not borrowed from the boys. Feminine touches like ruffled embellishments and metallic trimmings glamorize the look. I have a slate grey military jacket from Armani Exchange a few years ago and I'm so excited the trend has resurfaced. Mine is simple cotton, but worn ruffled trim lends it a downtown hipster vibe. When I heard The Hills' Whitney Port was getting her own spin-off show based in the Big Apple, I was uberexcited. Whitney always seemed the most classic, down-to-earth Hills star, and I couldn't wait to watch her unfold as the main character. Her new job at Diane von Furstenberg is jam-packed with all its own drama, but I absolutely love the style on the show. I've recently begun to reread Lewis Carroll's timeless classic Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. I haven't read the tale since 7th grade (5 years ago) and I am currently obsessed with all things Alice at the moment (as most of you have probably guessed from my most recent posts). But how does this relate to fashion, you ask? Well, if you didn't already know, Wonderland is full of fashionistas. I just got back from Nantucket and I must share some great fashion news! As I was shopping around on Old South Wharf, I discovered an adorable little boutique decked out in pink and bright polo shirts. Of course I had to get one, so I purchased a gray long sleeve polo with pink cuffs and a pink collar with blue and white striped fabric on the other side of it- perfect for popping! It turned out to be the hip Parisian boutique Vicomte Arthur, which has also established itself in Palm Beach. The look is very much the best of the two worlds, with bright, summery Palm Beach colors and classic Parisian silhouettes. The boutique also sells belts, ties, and sweaters, most of which are unisex, giving a cool boy-meets-girl vibe. Yes, it's Nantucket. The warm sun, the cool surf, the soft sand, the quaint shops, the intriguing history all add up to the perfect vacation spot off the Cape Cod coast. Nantucket truly has it all, yet it is kept free of traffic lights and each little house is a weathered cedar grey. Misty in the morning, the Grey Lady (as the island is called because of its typical morning fog) becomes abundant with sun by noon, perfect for heading to the beach to sunbathe, surf, eat, or just relax. This is where I'll be for the next week, so this is my last post until I come back Labor Day weekend. Have a great last week of summer!

Model Coco Rocha, as seen in the 2008 edition of Fashion Rocks showing off her dance skills in Rodarte and Louboutin heels, was discovered at a feis (an Irish dance competition) and from there her career took off. She has opened shows by dancing in her gillies down the runway (obviously I know all of the Irish dance lingo because I am an Irish dancer myself) and modeled in magazines around the globe with a feisanna flair. As a follow-up to rumors all over the comments on Rugby's blog The Inside Center, Rugby officially posted yesterday that in mid-August 2008, rugby.com will be relaunched, complete with a 'shop online' feature. Having only a select few stores in the US's preppy capitals and a collaboration a few years ago with hip French store Colette, not many shoppers have been able to get the full Rugby experience. Tried and true Ralph Lauren customers have been longing for a way to get the younger, hipper version of Ralph's designs for a while now, and later this month they finally can. Yesterday sitting in my inbox was an email from Rugby Ralph Lauren displaying a picture preview of the Rugby fall 2008 collection. The email said that for their fall women's collection, Rugby gives "a twist to classic Parisian style with menswear-inspired pieces and a variety of flirty dresses and skirts." Let me just say I am very excited and I cannot wait until they post the entire collection online!

Congratulations to Allie, winner of my fashion contest on the Teen Vogue forums! I interviewed the winner just this morning, asking her questions about fashion and beyond. Here is her interview and her final look that got her on Pink Tartan & Tweed!

Elle: Hey Allie! Here's your first question: How would you describe your personal style?

Allie: Hmmm... I would say my style is classic preppy, but I do like to mix in trendy pieces and bold colors to make outfits a little more fun!

E: Which designer inspires you most?

A: I have to say Marc Jacobs, I love all of his clothing and I especially like the Marc by Marc Jacobs collections.

E: What was the inspiration for your last back to school look and why did you pick it as your inspiration?

A: My biggest inspiration for my back to school outfit was definitely the Smarty Pants spread in the August Teen Vogue. I loved the rich colors and blazers and the whole fall look. Also, just watching runway collections from a wide variety of designers, not just ones that I know I like, gives me new ideas for outfits and new ways to look at fashion!

E: You put some pictures of British castles with your look, and the Smarty Pants spread was a bit more collegiate than regal. Was British royalty also an inspiration?

A: Yes, I took a history class last year at school and we went into great detail about the kings and queens in England. I absolutely fell in love with the regal look of their amazing gowns, endless ruffles and the luxurious fabrics. So I did try to incorporate a little bit of that look in my outfit as well.

E: Awesome! I'm inspired a lot by that as well! What are your back to school/fall essentials?

A: My top five back to school essentials are:
-Blazer
-Ankle boots
-Big cute tote for books that will match a lot of things (so probably black or brown)
-High waisted jeans (wide leg, but not super wide)
-Confidence!! You can pull off any look or any clothes if you work it!

E: Nice! I love the confidence part, too! So, what inspires you in your everyday life, fashion-wise or not?

A: What inspires me most is the world and things around me. If you want to succeed in life then you need to surround yourself with people that will support you. In order to do that you first need to stay true to yourself and not change yourself in order to fit in with other people. I also have a really good quote that really inspires me.
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss

E: I love that quote! What is one thing you would wish for if it would definitely come true?

A: This is going to sound like such a Miss America answer, but I would wish for world peace. I truly do mean it, if everyone wasn't so busy fighting then we could really concentrate on other things like helping to keep the world clean or eliminating poverty.
But... if it had to do with fashion then I would totally wish for a closet completely full of Marc by Marc Jacobs and See by Chloe clothing and accessories.

E: I love both of your answers! And I'd probably wish for world peace, too. I guess it's just the beauty queens in us, right?! I must ask- which Gossip Girl character is your style twin?

A: I would have to say Blair, I love Serena, but Blair's style is so much more classic and clean which is more of my style.

School's Cool

I know, I know. School just ended and everyone wants to enjoy their summer. But sooner or later you're going to have to think about back to school clothes, right? So I was looking online for Gossip Girl inspiration for my school uniform and I found this picture. I love this look so much: the colored tights, the chic coats, the bold bags, the posh headbands, the fabulous flats. This is probably the single picture that could inspire my entire back to school wardrobe (or at least for those of us who wear the dreaded uniform, it's more like uniform enhancers). I love the girl to the left in the ballerina pink ensemble, and I absolutely love that yellow bag the girl next to her is toting. So whether you hate to love it or love to hate it, school will come around eventually, along with an opportunity for some new clothes!

As I was thinking of ideas on what to write about next, I was glancing around my room and noticed atop my Ethan Allen highboy (my mom is one of their interior designers) was an antique fashion doll from colonial America circa 1750. My house is a colonial reproduction and contains many antiques that fit it quite nicely. I received the doll for Christmas one year after noting to my mom that I liked it in an antique shop in Connecticut. It is a very chic fashion doll, from the pretzel-like hairdo to the summery cream lace and blush silk dress tied with a pale rose silk bow. And although no one wears that style of dress anymore, it is fascinating to know you are holding hundreds of years of fashion history in your hands.

I've recently been analyzing the fall 2008 runways shows for every last detail to try to make my fall wardrobe the chicest it can be. When scouring Burberry's runway in particular, I noticed a huge trend that you can wait for in the fall or even start to wear now and be ahead of the curve: chunky jeweled necklaces. I have seen a few magazines mention this as an upcoming trend, but after looking at the way the brilliant beauties were paired with clean knits at the British design house, I decided this is definitely a trend for me. Look for chunky stones that are faceted to give a super-sparkly shine, and a lot of them. The bolder, the better!

This just in! I discovered these Much2Much by Katya Bochavar brooches in the August issue of Teen Vogue just yesterday, and it was love at first sight. As you know, I am very much obsessed with Rugby Ralph Lauren, and I thought these had very much that vibe, and they would be perfect touches to the ever-classic navy blazer or a knit cardigan. But when I looked up the price on page 133 of Teen Vogue in the "Smarty Pants" fashion spread, I noticed they were $200- and that I probably wouldn't end up getting one. So, I've decided to take on a DIY and make my own, and you can, too! Just grab one of your dad's old silk ties and a preppy crest (available at Rugby for $5 and up or at various sites online), and get to ruffling! This is sure to be one of my favorite prep school chic touches!
